Now that we learned that your eye comfort and contact lens comfort depend largely on the quality of your tears, let us learn a little about these all-important tears, so that we can optimize your comfort.
A tear has three parts:
1) An inner, sticky part that ensures that the tear does not ‘fall out’ of your eye, but ‘sticks’ to your eyeball
2) A watery middle part that makes up most of your tear and
3) a tiny oily [lipid] outer layer that keeps it all together.
How big is your normal tear film?
Although the tear film is very important, it is extremely thin. Let us compare the thickness or your total tear to a US dime (10 cent) coin: You can fit the thickness of nearly 200 tear films in the thickness of one dime!
