a) DID YOU KNOW THIS?

Firstly, you are not alone if you have tired, irritated, scratchy eyes!
Or if your contact lenses bother you…
In the United States alone there are as many as 59 million people suffering from these symptoms and nearly one in every ten of the 35 million American contact lens wearers feel discomfort to such a degree that they drop out wearing contact lenses all together.

Causes and symptoms of discomfort are often related to a medical condition called “Dry Eye”. This condition is best described as either the lack of quantity and/or the lack of quality of the tear film in your eyes.

Why are your tears so important? They have many functions. Not only do they protect the eyeball, but also they are the only vehicles to deliver nutrients to the eye surface (There is no blood supply). Not only are they part of your vision (they form the first lens of your eye), your tears also wash the eye clean, and lubricate the eyelid. Contact lenses float among the top of your tear film, not on your eyeball.

Does “Dry Eye” get better? Unfortunately there is no known cure and many of the Dry Eye causes and symptoms are related to age and it gets worse with age. Also how and where you live, work and play impacts the quality of your tears. For example, Air conditioning in the summer and dry heat in the winter help evaporate your tear. Stress, computer work, contact lenses and Lasik are factors why can have Dry Eye. Dust, smoke, skin debris also do not help.

Are there treatments that can temporarily help? Yes. For example there are eye drops that can temporarily help. None are perfect for all individuals, that is why there are so many different ones. There are also tiny [Punctum] plugs that your doctor may insert to keep the tears in your eyes a little longer. Drugs, good nutrition and vitamin supplements also may temporarily help.
